Highlights
A few years ago after attending the Global Service Design Conference, I wrote a piece called 'Why You Need a Service Design Coach' that started a number of provocative conversations. I believe some of the topics raised in this piece are worth re-visiting, and I intend to explore the following in a future piece and conversations with some of you (my network):
- How do we define 'scalable' and what might successful scaling of service design look like?
- What elements of typical service design engagements should be refined (or even eliminated) to make it easier for others to take them on?
- What distinguishes business design from service design, and is the distinction helpful or unnecessary? If helpful, what elements of each discipline could benefit the another?
- How do you speed up service design delivery when slow uptake isn't an option? (e.g. pandemic type situation means all hands on deck for a re-visioning of an organization's core offering and fast timeline for execution)
- What other models or best practices do service design coaches borrow from that make their work more sticky? #servicedesign #design #businessandmanagement
Real talk question for my design friends (especially women): how have you navigated to roles which may feel like a bit of a stretch—i.e. you don’t fit all the years of experience requirements but have the ‘will’ and the mindset to drive results—and some really incredible stories about impact from other roles? I am job searching again and curious to hear in particular from designers who made the leap from Senior Manager to Director or VP of Design or CX without an in-house promotion.
