Now that I've had some time to recover from Digestive Disease Week® (DDW), I wanted to share about my experience attending. I have been to DDW on two other occasions, once as an IBD advocate and once when I was a staff member at the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. Both experiences were memorable for a variety of reasons, but I can say that this year definitely was the most meaningful.

DDW was the first major outing/social event/trip I had taken since pre-pandemic, since my #mentalhealth tanked. To prepare for the trip, I spent four months focused on doing gradual exposures to different aspects of life that I would experience there and had been avoiding for years-- sleeping away from home, eating around people, eating in restaurants, socializing with new people, etc. It was HARD and I had moments where I didn't think I would be able to do it or that it was worth it. But let me tell you, the hard work, sweat, and tears (many, many tears) were so incredibly worth it.

For the first time since before the pandemic, I felt a sense of normalcy - at DDW I felt like who I was before my #OCD and #anxiety took over my life. Catching up with former colleagues (Sylvia Ehle, Claire Alston, Eric Israel, Andres Hurtado-Lorenzo, PhD, and Becky Johnson Rescola) was such a treat. Seeing old friends (Gaylyn Henderson, Aaron Blocker, MSc. Alicia Aiello, and Amy Bugwadia) made my heart so full. And, of course, seeing so many of the physicians I previously worked with and currently work with (Ross Maltz, Meenakshi Bewtra, Neilanjan Nandi, MD, FACP, AGAF, FACP, Joseph Picoraro, Deborah Proctor, Nana Bernasko, DNP, CRNP, WHNP-BC, Jami Kinnucan, MD, Kate Scarlata, MPH, RDN, Megan Riehl, Psy. D., Adam Ehrlich, Jessica Naftaly, Ph.D., and so many others) made me so incredibly happy. Lastly, meeting my #IBS warrior friends in person -- Jeffrey Roberts MEd, Christine Olivo, Erica Dermer, and Katherine Wald -- was the icing on the (gluten-free) cake.

Thank you to Johannah Ruddy M.Ed and the team at Ardelyx for bringing us to DDW and prioritizing the importance of the patient experience in all they do. I learned so much while I was there -- both about digestive diseases and my own strength and fortitude -- and for that I am so incredibly grateful.
