Last week at the Moms First Summit I had the privilege of listening to some of the most notable and courageous women speak about policy, women's rights, the workplace, paid parental leave, and the future of motherhood. One resounding message was clear: we need to collectively and consistently advocate for the change we deserve. Here are my favorite takeaways:

✨ The US needs a social safety net. "Other countries have a safety net, but we have women." 84% of people in the US support paid family leave, but policy and most businesses have yet to be swayed by public opinion.

✨ Did you know that universal childcare was actually passed by Congress in 1973, but President Nixon vetoed it? The right-wing influence touted “traditional” families, ie: keeping mothers at home.

✨ Childcare isn't just a social issue, it's an economic issue. It's not just the right thing to do, it's the best thing for businesses. Business cannot work without women. (Sec. of Commerce Gina Raimondo)

✨ There is a societal tradeoff that women are often forced to make between working and motherhood. However, as Hillary Clinton said, “I never stopped working and I never stopped being the best mother I could be.”

✨ It's alarming that 84% of maternal deaths in the US are preventable, particularly among Black mothers. We need to address the maternal mortality crisis and inequities in standard of care.

Let's continue to push for change and advocate for policies that support women and families. #paidleave #motherhood #universalchildcare #change #policy #data #healthcare #inequity #paidfamilyleave #forbes
