"How do I become a Test Pilot, as a civilian?"

I've been asked this question frequently by pilots starting their career and looking for a way to break into the profession. My initial advice in starting any new job is that you'll need either education, or experience (and of course, if you can, both).

Focusing on the experience piece, whether you are a CFI, Survey pilot, corporate, whatever your first job is, while building hours - all aircraft have maintenance. Become the pilot in your flight office that flies maintenance check flights, troubleshoots anomalies, works with your A&Ps to understand the systems as this will be imperative in growing this skillset. The knowledge you gain will work alongside acting as a safe and standardized pilot in your company.

As you become a more experienced pilot, and reach the 1,500-2,000 hours flight range, and are still interested in flight test, I recommend pursuing Production Flight Test. I've often described what these jobs look like - but here is a posting for one below. When I saw it, I wanted to point this out to help answer the question. These positions in Production Flight Test are an amazing opportunity.

As always, I am happy to discuss those transitioning or starting out in this career field, don't be afraid to send me a message.

'When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll captures what I am finding is common in the way we discuss new #technology.

What does your business actually need to accomplish the mission?

Is it Artificial Intelligence or is it Machine Learning?

Is it Machine Learning or is it fancy statistics?

Is it Big Data or is it a lot of Data?

Is it a digital twin or is it configuration management?

Why does it matter? Because decision makers and leaders need to understand what types of technology they are asking for and have a basic understanding how to resource it properly.

How do you stay informed?
