I’m a massive fan of technology, and I especially enjoy experimenting with new tools. I am fascinated by the advances in AI. Many conversations about the tools focus on workplace integration—efficiencies, job replacement, automation—but there are so many exciting ways to test them outside of work.
For instance, you and a friend want to start a book and supper club. You can ask an AI tool to suggest books based on genres, authors, or themes—maybe historical fiction featuring women as the main characters. Once you’ve selected “The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah, you can prompt the tool to create a list of discussion questions for the group and recommend a themed menu with dairy-free options for your group.
Now, you’ve got a lively night of discussion ahead of you, complete with a delicious meal of coq au vin, poached pears, and suggested wine pairings! Around the home, some of us have a green thumb, and some of us aspire to keep just one houseplant alive. Whichever describes you, AI tools can help. Prompt the tool to suggest plants that suit your climate, align with your sustainability goals, and won’t threaten your pets’ health. If you need to, clarify that you’d like easy-to-main varieties and ask for recommended timelines for planting, pruning, and fertilizing. Maybe you’ll be the next contender for Garden-of-the-Month!
Or maybe you’ve been looking for a creative outlet. AI tools can help you move in the right direction with prompts for journaling or songwriting, and design tools can help you add new visual elements to your artwork. If you’ve read some of my other writings, you know I prioritize self-care and personal growth. AI tools can be a great partner in your efforts with guided meditations, experiential learning opportunities, and personal finance tools. For instance, maybe you’re interested in regaining your long-lost fluency in a foreign language. Prompt an AI tool with the skills you’ve retained to receive a plan that includes suggested exercises, like watching in-language news, and a weekly schedule to keep you on track.
Make road trips go faster with games from AI! Prompt an AI tool to create trivia questions to challenge yourself or your friends and family—and then get suggestions for a team name for your next local trivia night! The tributes of Susan Wojcicki rightfully acknowledge her as a trailblazer in the tech industry—one of the earliest Google employees and later the CEO of YouTube. She was also an influential person in my life and career.
In 2011, I led marketing efforts at 23andMe, where Susan’s sister, Anne Wojcicjki, was and still is its co-founder and CEO. Around the same time, Susan’s team at Google was launching the social network Google+.
I’ve worked in marketing and, since its inception, social media advertising. Anne suggested that I meet with Susan to share some of my experience and knowledge. I was both flattered and daunted at the prospect of this meeting. Susan was an established voice in Silicon Valley, and I was an up-and-coming marketer—what could I really share that she didn’t already know?
We scheduled a brief 15-minute meeting, during which I expected we would exchange pleasantries and discuss a few high-level trends. Instead, Susan took notes—lots of them, all written on sticky notes that covered our meeting table by the end of our nearly hour-long conversation. Following our meeting, she asked me to participate in her team meeting with the heads of many large and significant teams at Google. I think she knew it I was nervous and assured me that visitors often come to the meeting. Not only was this an exceptionally generous invitation, but it showcased the inquisitiveness and kindness she emulated through her leadership.
The next meeting included more than fifty people, including online participants from around the world. Together, we discussed the social media advertising landscape, and I shared my personal experience on the various platforms and their advertising options. It was a privilege to gain exposure to this influential audience. Not only was I able to facilitate collaborative activities between Google and 23andMe, but I also built relationships that later opened the doors to many new opportunities.
As my career has progressed, I often recall my first meeting with Susan and how much it meant to me. First, she didn’t question if my personal networks or educational pedigree met any particular standards to warrant her time. Second, when Susan peppered me with questions and took notes, she sent a strong message that curiosity never stops and should be core at every level of a company. And third, her introduction to the Google team gave me a boost of credibility that was unmatched and paved the way for many of my career pursuits.
Susan Wojcicki’s strong impression has stuck with me over the years. She was generous with her time and influence and set an example for the type of leader I strive to be. Her actions remind me of the ripple effect we can have in this world. Together with so many, I send my thoughts to her family, friends, and colleagues as we all remember a remarkable woman.
