As a magazine writer, Cherlin's work has appeared in New York Magazine, GQ, Rolling Stone, and The New Republic, among others.1 From 2016 to 2019, he was the Supervising Writer at VICE News Tonight on HBO, where he oversaw scripts and features and won an Emmy for covering the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.1 He joined NBC News as a Senior Producer in December 2019 before transitioning to the Podcast Unit in 2021.1

Cherlin's work has received several awards, including a Peabody Award and a Scripps Howard Award for Southlake, which was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist.1 He also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Newscast for "Moment of Truth: Kavanaugh and Ford".1
