Highlights
This year’s IWD theme of #InspireInclusion resonates for me, especially in tandem to last year’s #EmbraceEquity. Inclusion requires celebrating diversity and empowerment, breaking down barriers, and challenging stereotypes.
We continue to make strides in these areas, BUT it's still not enough. The pace of change is slow, and more is needed in areas like these: - As of year-end 2022, women represented 9.4% of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, up from <1% in 2000. Retaining more women in mid-management roles will help to fill the c-suite pipeline. - Women are 35% of the US STEM workforce, +31% from 2011 to 2021. We need more ways to recruit female students into STEM curriculums. (source: NSF) - McKinsey’s Women in the Workforce Report 2023 highlights a shift in the biggest barrier to women’s advancement. It was formerly labeled the ‘glass ceiling’, now the ‘broken rung’, which represents a woman’s first promotion to manager. In 2023, for every 100 men promoted to manager from entry level, there were 87 promotions for women. Diverse and inclusive recruiting, training, development and mentoring processes will help to improve this metric. The McKinsey report also highlights five core areas of focus for companies for the support and advancement of women; of these, three impact inclusion: (1) empowering managers to be effective people leaders, (2) unlocking the full potential of flexible work, and (3) fixing the broken rung once and for all. There are different ways to tackle these focus areas, but here are my suggestions: - Educate leaders and teams about DE&I, and then conduct workshops to allow attendees to practice the new ways of operating. - Collect regular employee feedback, through community sessions, 1:1s, electronic surveys, or even a suggestion box. - Establish a culture or diversity council or an employee resource group whose goals should be tied to both business and culture objectives. Celebrate the wins. - Review company policies including recruiting, onboarding, benefits, pay, and holidays, and - If the work environment is fully remote, create occasions to foster inclusion even when employees are separated by thousands of miles. So, however you choose to #InspireInclusion today, take a few minutes to think about, thank, celebrate, and encourage the women in your life and in your workplace. I also invite you to commit to 2-3 meaningful actions to further inspire inclusion so future generations of female leaders and their advocates will benefit.
After today, I am still a mentor, coach, advocate AND my authentic self.
I will #InspireInclusion and #EmbraceEquity, every day, for all women, around the world.
THANK YOU to those that inspire, support, and encourage me, every day and in every way. Happy International Women’s Day. #IWD #InternationalWomensDay #InspireInclusion #EmbraceEquity
