"TOO WOKE!" 🤔
That is one piece of feedback I received after a presentation on workplace bullying. This response made me realize there’s a need to clarify what’s really at stake.
When it comes to addressing bullying, it’s not about labels or terminology. It’s about recognizing behaviors that can have a detrimental impact on individuals, businesses, and public service as a whole. It's about respect.
Bullying is a well-researched and documented issue that harms workplace culture, reduces productivity, and creates toxic environments. As a business owner who works closely with public sector clients, I understand the importance of creating a culture of empathy and respect. This isn’t just good for business; it’s crucial for effectively serving our communities.
Understanding how our behaviors affect others allows us to better support our teams, allocate resources wisely, and deliver services that truly meet the needs of the people we serve. By fostering a culture of respect, we not only improve our workplaces but also enhance the effectiveness of public service.
So, when it comes to addressing bullying, it’s about much more than being "woke", however one understands the meaning of the word. It’s about ensuring that everyone in the workplace is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, which ultimately benefits us and the communities we serve.

HR is NOT the problem - How we treat HR, is.
HR professionals enter the profession largely to help others and are equipped to do so. They find out quickly just how little that actually happens and how restricted they are to implement novel solutions to our collective workplace problems.
