Yup, the rumors are true. Reviewed (or Reviewed.com, as we old-timers call it) will close as of Nov 1st. That makes me sad, both as someone fundamental to the expansion & sale of the company and as someone who still wrote for & used the site after I left in 2012.
It also doesn’t surprise me: I don’t think the Powers That Be™ ever really understood Reviewed.com’s secret sauce: the people who work there.
It wasn’t ad sales, AI experiments, CPM, or any of that SEO bullshit that they got caught up in. It wasn’t about conversions, affiliate fees, or leveraging one TLA into another. It was about people who care about what they buy and use.
The secret was finding people who are enthusiastic about products, about testing them, and figuring out new and interesting ways to use that information to help readers make better choices.
Really, that’s no secret: Plenty of others have figured it out and created better iterations, and I am sure that will continue. As Marcus Aurelius once said, “The universe is transformation, life is opinion.”
I hope that the people who worked at Reviewed.com will land on their feet. They are all smart writers and testers who deserve to find jobs where they can use those skills and keep doing good stuff. If any of them need a recommendation, they know where I am. To others: you should hire them.
