Strange request.

Are you a tech CEO who lives (maybe works and lives) like me in Surrey?

Back some 40 years ago I started to give my 'State of the IT Nation' speeches - originally for the CSA/CSSA/Intellect (now TechUK). Then for the Prince's Trust.

As all the old rockers are now reuniting for a farewell tour, I am contemplating doing the same in the New Year for a very select group of top CEOs. It will be for charity and in a lovely location in Surrey.

If you would like to be considered for an invite, please message me or email [email protected].

Note - Photo below from my very first such presentation in 1988. I do look at bit older now!

Just have to pick the theme music now...

I find this post almost too difficult to write. I guess most readers will know by now that my old friend Mike Lynch is missing, presumed drowned, after the terrible yacht sinking in Sicily. Angela, his wife, has survived but his 18 year old daughter Hannah is still missing.

But also Stephen Chamberlain, who stood trial with Mike in the US and just two months ago was also acquitted, against all the odds, was critically injured in a car accident on Saturday and has since died. Two lives which had been blighted by the HP/Autonomy case and the US/UK Extradition Treaty for over 10 years. Then, as Mike had described, they were both granted a ‘second life’. Only for both to die within days of one another after just two months of peace and freedom. It is something that I still find unbelievable as well as unbelievably sad.

I didn’t really know Stephen but I’ve counted Mike as a friend for so long – well over 25 years now.

My very last message from Mike was to arrange for us to have lunch at Wiltons next month to celebrate his acquittal in the US. I have written literally hundreds of articles about Mike, Autonomy and the HP case since the 1990s. I have never opined on Mike's innocence or guilt. Just that the way he had been treated was terrible as the US/UK Extradition Treaty is so one-sided and unfair. He always messaged to thank me every time I posted my views.

You will doubtless read many articles about the careers of both men. Mike was a unique British tech talent. Goodness knows what he could have achieved next.

But it was Mike ‘the person’ that I knew and corresponded with throughout his ordeal. He told me about his dog Faucet that kept him company – maybe kept him sane – during his house arrest in SF. I just don’t know how he withstood the strain. I could not have done so.

Throughout Angela, his wife, was by his side. Now she has lost both a husband and a daughter just as they were putting their lives as a family back together.

It is just too tragic. Just so incredibly sad.
