Highlights
Product management in startups is hard.
Part art, part science.
Often with lack of data to guide the way.
And massive pressure on short-term growth.
Five unforced errors I’ve seen in my time:
-
Prioritise only the features the largest customers shout about.
-
Ignore customers and think you are smarter than them.
-
Try to build as many features as possible at the expense of quality.
-
Build only what the competition builds.
-
Build what the highest paid executive tells you to build.
In the end, you’ve got to come back to basics.
Who is the target customer?
What are their jobs to be done?
How can you help them solve those jobs faster, better or smarter?
Start with first principles and you realise almost everything else is just noise.
