This won't be the first time someone from the tech world has tried to fix drug discovery. Drug Discovery will be EASY they say. We just need more GPUs bro. Google's last biology moonshot, Calico Labs, burned through several billions dollars with a similar All-Star cast -- they've been trying to solve ageing long before the podcast bros got into the game, but with nothing to show so far.
Maybe this time will be different? I don't want to be a hater. DeepMind's track record of accomplishments is second to none. And this time, they're building off AlphaFold, a genuinely transformational new tool. However, it's not really clear how we get from point A to point B. AlphaFold doesn’t have the kind of scaling law we see with LLMs, where you can just crank up the parameters and data and boom new drugs. Supposedly they're focused on six targets in the immuno-oncology space - but what this indicates is that these are probably well known targets. They're entering a hyper-competitive space, betting on de novo synthetic proteins to outperform existing antibodies and small molecules.
One can criticize Demis for the hyperbole, but in today's AI hype era, I get it. As CEO of DeepMind he has many mouths to feed and TPUs to power. I just things were different. I wish his incentives could be realigned towards trying to win a second Nobel prize instead. But now that he gets to hang out with Silicon Valley royalty, it's hard to avoid the unique brain poison that comes with spending time with guys who made 100x what you did on Facebook growth team
DeepMind should be THE academic refuge. Google scale TPUs plus Google salary for some weirdos working on some new AI frontier because they explicitly don't wanna do LLMs. It should be like running the world's premiere 1000 person lab. 10,000 is probably too big.
While biotech has always had an air of secrecy, I remain bothered that the DeepMind plan seems to lack a major first principles insight. This is where Elon shines. Rocketry can be transformed if we can land the booster. Electric cars can work with lithium batteries. Even boring company is like tunnels can work if we repurpose the rock we break to make the walls. There's some key insight + a technical hurdle. I don't see it here...it's more 1) build an amazing protein folding model, 2) ??? 3) AI solves everything. Luckily if I'm wrong, maybe we will all live forever.
