Richard Smith

Richard Smith is the Director of the Centre for Digital Media and a Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. He also holds the position of Director at the Centre for Policy Research on Science and Technology (CPROST) at SFU. With a background in communication and law, he has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Carleton University, a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Communication from Simon Fraser University.

His research primarily revolves around the impacts of new media on social inclusion and exclusion, technology for education, privacy, and surveillance in public spaces, online communities, and the wireless information society. Some of his current research projects include civic engagement and surveillance environments, privacy issues in mobile technologies, innovative technologies for scholarly publishing, and mobile social software platforms.

Richard Smith's expertise lies in the fields of mobile phones and society, social software and society, surveillance and society, and new media innovation. He is a member of the Canadian Communication Association and the International Association for Management of Technology, and has experience as a publisher of the Canadian Journal of Communication. Throughout his career, he has held various academic positions at Simon Fraser University and other institutions, focusing on communication, new media, innovation, and technology.
