Index-Journal, a family-owned daily newspaper, wants to maintain its base of talented, energetic and aggressive staff writers on its award-winning team. While it's true we're not a major metro, we do have a hard-working staff that has surpassed the parameters established for a small daily. Again, we are a family-owned newspaper, which means we don’t have the layers of corporate BS — I mean executives — to wade through. This was another great year for our small staff as we collected 19 press awards, earned second place in general excellence. We have collected well more than 100 South Carolina Press Association awards, many of which have been for our investigative reporting, beat coverage and feature writing. We want reporters who are as capable of generating excellent human interest features as they are at generating solid investigative and in-depth pieces. We want reporters with appetites who will learn the communities they cover and the delve head-first into their beats. We want reporters who are willing to tackle assignments they are given, but who are typically so busy with the enterprise work they have come up with that they struggle to fit in the “other stuff." Candidates should be able to dig into local reporting on all levels and should not be afraid to ask the tough questions. After all, that's the kind of reporting that garners awards from your peers and accolades from the readers you serve. The ideal candidate must understand local news matters and be able to convey that through stories, photos and video. Candidates also have to be digital savvy, employing social media in an effort to build and retain readers and viewers alike. Think digital first, get something even fresher for print. The Greenwood (S.C.) Index-Journal, a small community daily, is looking for a talented, energetic and aggressive sports writer to join its award-winning team. That's the problem. They come in, do great work, win awards and move on out. We hate to see him go, but that's the way this biz is.
We’re no second-rate publication. We take pride in our work, and it shows in the number of S.C. Press Association awards we have received through the years. And that includes numerous awards for sports feature and news writing. We cover a dozen schools — public and private — and have two colleges we cover, Lander University and Erskine College. Sure, football is king just as it is anywhere in the South, but we don’t ignore the other sports, and there’s plenty to be covered. And plenty of talent out there to supply a good flow of feature material.
We’re a family-owned newspaper, which means we don’t have the corporate newspaper shockwaves rippling through our newsroom. We recognize that solid local content is what brings readers back to our newspaper and website.
We want to challenge the regular parameters attached to small papers. We believe the best way for a newspaper to succeed in this economic climate is to put out the best product possible.
The ideal candidate must understand local sports matters and be able to convey that through stories and photos. He or she must also understand the importance of digital-first journalism, using social media and video to tell their stories. The ideal candidate must be aggressive, creative and thorough. Key ingredients are pride in work and a passion for journalism.
We’ve hired journalists from California to Florida. Our hires have had degrees from Missouri, Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, Ohio, Northwestern (master’s degree) and Georgia (master’s degree).
