Rick Deines

Civil Conversations Trainer and Advocate

Rick Deines has a strong background rooted in the Volga Russian-German tradition, with parents who were sugar beet farmers in Colorado before his father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.

He pursued his education by attending junior college at New Mexico Military Institute, obtaining a B.A. from Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS, and a MTH degree from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.

Rick's career included inner-city church work in Chicago, where he later utilized his experience to establish the Milwaukee Lutheran Coalition in 1982, retiring in 2003.

He was instrumental in starting Habitat for Humanity in Milwaukee in 1984 and chaired the board until 1999, helping revitalize neighborhood churches and co-founding Serenity Inns for addicted men.

Rick is a key member of The Frank Zeidler Center for Public Discussion, focusing on promoting civil dialogue by teaching effective conversation methods as a primary trainer.

He values family deeply and is part of a supportive unit with wife Dixie, daughter Kelly and her family, and son Tim with his family.
