Reflections of a Founder Mini-Blog 11: My First Public Speaking Experience Was Terrifying

I had my first public speaking experience in 2014. I was a finalist for the Amsterdam Science and Innovation Award. My idea was to create supplemented food products designed to optimize the health of students, based on research on neuroprotective vitamins and minerals. Mind you, this was during the "superfood" era when supplements weren't as mainstream as they are now (I feel old just typing this).

It was humbling to be in the finals alongside scientists who were developing early versions of AI models and cellular imaging software. Despite the excitement, I was incredibly nervous about the event. I had never spoken in front of hundreds of people, let alone scientists, investors and other impressive individuals. When I entered the stage, I had just a few minutes to pitch my idea. My hands were shaking and I mispronounced words. It felt like I was failing the pitch.

Funny enough, people came up to me afterward to compliment me on my presentation skills. I was quite surprised when they told me I seemed so confident. I realized that I might not be as bad at presenting as I thought. You'd hope that after this experience, you'd no longer feel nervous about public speaking events. However, the opposite is true. I'm nervous before every presentation I give. But I've come to realize that's not a bad thing. It shows that I care about my audience. I respect their time and I'm driven to deliver the best possible talk.
