Personal Post Alert! https://lnkd.in/eCJSshgM

I'm getting off my big, fat ass for the next few months and helping a very worthwhile local charity.

I've been inspired to do so by a friend called Tony Hughes. I played rugby with Tony for a few years and he was an incredibly inspirational leader on and off the pitch. He'd beast us all in training and beat the whole team to every breakdown, tackle and disturbance - especially the ones that he'd caused :)

A beast of a man and natural protector, he was a long standing and respected member of Greater Manchester Police and he continues to lead and inspire in this endeavor and with his personal battle with MS.

This summer, 1st July - 18th September 2024 (80 days), Team MS Therapy Centre (NW) will embark upon an epic challenge to circumnavigate the globe. Following the route depicted in the Jules Verne novel, the team will attempt to cover the 26000 miles in 80 days.

A mix of all abilities will be combining to form a team that will run, walk, swim, cycle, hop, skip and jump in a virtual event around the world. Your kind donations will go towards the development of the new MS Therapy Centre in Eccles, Greater Manchester.

The aim at the charity is to enrich the lives of people with Multiple Sclerosis by providing therapies in a caring, supportive and positive environment. The aim of the therapies is to enable all living with MS to have a better quality of life.

MS Therapy Centre (NW) a self-help group and UK registered charity endeavors to provide a complete service for MS sufferers who visit from across the North West on England.

My wife (who is a Neuro Occupational Therapist) raised money for it when she gave me a whooping in the UK Ironman a few years ago....

En route to ASCRS for the umpteenth time…I’ve been to this meeting and many others multiple times over the years and I’m in a reflective mood as we touch down in a rainy Dublin.

It’s in Boston again which is a great city and my overriding emotion is one of gratitude.

I’m from a humble background: my dad was a fireman and my mom worked in children’s homes, as a social worker and ultimately on a children’s cancer ward. Vital, helpful, difficult and important roles but unfortunately the pay doesn’t reflect their value to society.

I fell into ophthalmology sales almost 3 decades ago when a group of entrepreneurs took a chance on a young lad with some potential, common sense and a strong work ethic. It took me a couple of months to remember that there are 2 h’s in ophthalmology….

I’m thankful that I’ve been able to contribute in an industry where I can genuinely make a difference to the quality of life of ordinary people. Working with smart and passionate professionals every day.

ASCRS is one example of many meetings we have where the best of the best get together: clinicians, AHCP’s, industry, dreamers, innovators, investors etc.

There’s always competition but there is also a great deal of collaboration as people work together to take treatment options forward for the betterment of patients.

But don’t tell me travel is still glamorous! 😉
