At a time when the majority (albeit not all) of current politicians seem defined by ambition, confidence, and little else; Alistair excelled in the virtues of resilience, decency, integrity and reasoning.
I had the honour of working in his private office for 2 years during the financial crisis. And I remain in awe, to this day, of his ability to make the most difficult decisions, under the most extreme pressure, and content with all of the credit being taken elsewhere. He will go down in history as one of the great Chancellors.
