Have you ever found your software architecture is collapsing because you decided to "ride it out"?
I've built the wrong architecture multiple times, often by selecting the wrong tool for the job (e.g., MongoDB when our data was relational).
But it's hard to throw it all away when you've invested 1000s of hours and 💰 millions of dollars in engineering.
More often than not, the best path forward was to apply some sticky tape, cross our fingers 🤞, and hope for the best.
But I was wrong; we only burned further time and resources. 😵
It's human nature to want to see these investments pay off, but this can sometimes lead us down a dangerous path known as the Sunken Cost Fallacy.
🌟 What is the Sunken Cost Fallacy?
The Sunken Cost Fallacy is the tendency to continue investing in a project or decision based on the cumulative prior investment (costs that cannot be recovered) rather than evaluating the future benefits. This can lead to: • Prolonged inefficiency: Sticking with outdated processes or projects. • Wasted resources: Throwing good money after bad. • Stifled innovation: Fear of abandoning what's not working prevents new opportunities.
🛠️ How to Avoid It?
- Regular Evaluations: Periodically assess the value and progress of ongoing projects.
- Objective Decision-Making: Focus on future potential rather than past investments.
- Embrace Change: Be willing to pivot or abandon projects that no longer serve their purpose.
- Encourage a Growth Mindset: Foster a culture where learning from mistakes and moving on is valued over clinging to sunk costs.
🌱 Personal Reflection I've seen firsthand how the Sunken Cost Fallacy can hold back growth and innovation. Recognizing it and making conscious, forward-thinking decisions can create more efficient, productive, and fulfilling work environments.
🙋 Have you ever suffered from the sunken cost fallacy?
