I'm thrilled to announce that the Rob Reiner Foundation will be giving $10,000 to Montefiore Hospital's Pediatric Rehab Medicine's initiative to provide 3D printed prosthetics to disabled children. There will be a "big check" ceremony at the hospital on May 19th. Updates to follow.
Pediatric patients are often unable to receive prosthetic devices due to insurance denials because they need to be replaced often for growing children. Using a 3D printed prosthetic provides a major cost benefit to the patient and family.
Children adapt well to the loss of function and manipulate prostheses and other limbs with great agility. They are particularly sensitive to peer acceptance and rejection. The use of well-fitting prosthetic reduces pain and depression. Conversely, if the prosthetic application is absent or delayed, greater degrees of anxiety, sadness and self-consciousness are observed.
