Proof that Generative AI is not yet ready to do your job?
When I was in High School, I was the second person awake in our house after my father. In a family of 6 this was the quietest time in the house. Over morning coffee, my dad and I would take turns reading the newspaper. He would always get the WSJ first and I would skim the Cleveland Plain Dealer while waiting for the Journal. My dad got me in the daily habit of reading the left margin of the WSJ. “Even when you don’t have time to read the entire paper, read the left margin and you will know most of what’s happening in the world.”
It’s a practice I continue today - and boy was I upset when the WSJ changed their digital format earlier this year removing the left margin from the digital edition. (The change was later rolled back after an outcry from subscribers.)
The last few weeks I’ve watched my treasured left margin headlines with amusement and a little surprise. Each day there are several headlines that don’t make sense - they don’t give the reader enough information and leave out key data points (most frequently the names of the companies involved). They are clearly applying Generative AI technology, but without actively editing the suggestions that their language model spits out. After a day or two, I figured that it would be corrected. But I’ve been watching this for at least two weeks and it seems like someone is asleep at the wheel.
This is a good reminder that GenAI can be transformative in augmenting human potential and performance, but is not a substitute for a brain with human blood and oxygen circulating through it questioning and correcting generated responses. As you consider uses for GenAI in your business, consider the proper governance and process gates to ensure quality and ethical results.
