Calvin Drayton was a tremendous mentor, coach, emergency manager, and leader. He held high standards for us and for himself, and offered seasoned and insightful advice. Many of my most influential mentors at NYCEM worked with him more closely and for much longer. As a more junior staff member working EOC activations, I remember Calvin as commanding and methodical, but not threatening. He would sincerely ask, "What am I missing folks?" and listened to well-reasoned ideas that were different than his. He balanced directness with carefulness.

Like Commissioner Esposito, he cared for his staff and had a sense of humor. He received an obviously fake Valentine, involved himself in helping "solve" a non-issue accidental swap of lunch containers, noticed a prank flyer for salsa dancing lessons in the EOC, and he laughed at all of them. A handful of my NYCEM/OEM friends and I had a trivia team "Calvin's Angels" - our first night out we realized not to quit our day jobs - and I mentioned this to him in passing as some of us were leaving the Situation Room from a heat activation one night. He shook his head and said "I don't want to know, I do not want to know ... ... but did you win?"

We had some opportunities to work with Calvin recently on an EOC Leadership Coaching project, and it was very meaningful to meet with him and learn from him again. Calvin so clearly cared about working with his team to manage emergencies better - I am very grateful to have learned from him.
