Highlights
Brotherhood is a theme weighing heavy in my mind lately. With the news that the last surviving member of easy company has passed on, I can no more than reflect on how brotherhood shaped him and his legacy and how I can hope to achieve that same legacy in my own life.
I started down the path to become an officer in the Marine corps, and though I did not take a commission I did make a few brothers along the way. Most of the fine young men in OCS Class 198 Alpha Company went on to be great examples of what a marine should be.
Of that class, I lost a personal friend in 1L Scott Fleming, who gave up his life providing security for elections in the Helmand province. In my own platoon, I also had a brother in Jay Cooper whose life was sadly taken from us too soon. Jay did not take his commission either, but he did become involved in his local community where his absence is still felt.
So there were definitely dark days, but there were some pretty bright ones too. I've not gotten the chance to actually speak to him since it happened to him, but Frank Zastoupil racked across the squad bay from me and we both had similar dreams of flight. Frank followed through with his, and today he gets to wear a pretty special blue and gold flight suit. Very proud of you Frank.
That journey and all the strife and doubt since brought me to Ben Owen. Those of you following our pages probably know all about him. But you weren't there when he took his last drink. Or when his wife and I had to trick him into getting some sleep because he wouldn't stop trying to save Afghans. Or saw the look on his face when he became godfather to my youngest daughter just a few weeks ago. I hold so much pride and purpose around how far he has come and how much farther he's going to go.
In keeping with the theme of brotherhood, and in honor of Bradford Freeman, today I have a small challenge for you. Let's see each of you post something today that remembers and honors those who sacrificed for you and lifts up and praises those who have given you joy and pride and esprit de corps.
Remember your brothers today, and donate something (anything) at https://lnkd.in/gWJtEbR6.
