While the words "expert" and "experience" share many letters, the concepts they represent are quite distinct. Experience alone doesn't necessarily equate to expertise.

Expertise involves a deep, evolving knowledge base, honed skills, formal and ongoing training, and an ability to adapt and innovate, effective problem solving ...

Experience is the foundation upon which expertise is built, but it's not the whole structure.

Having experience doesn't automatically make someone an expert. In fact, experience can sometimes hinder growth and progress.

Professionals may stagnate, falling into the trap of doing things the way they've always been done. This was evident during my years in broadcast as the industry transitioned to digital. Many of our top account executives resisted the change, mistaking their years of experience for expertise in a field that was rapidly evolving. Some were unable or unwilling to learn the new ways, clinging to outdated methods while the industry moved forward. Conversely, others who had struggled before began to thrive in the new connected world.

We've all heard the saying, "practice makes perfect," but what if you're practicing the wrong thing? Experience, in this sense, can lead to ingrained habits that don't necessarily serve you in a changing environment.

Here are some common obstacles that prevent experienced individuals from becoming true experts:

Overreliance on Past Experiences: Relying solely on past successes can limit your ability to adapt to new challenges.

Lack of Formal Training or Ongoing Education: Staying current in your field requires continuous learning, whether through formal training or informal education.

Failure to Keep Up with Advances: Ignoring advancements in your industry can lead to obsolescence.

Limited Exposure to Diverse Perspectives: Seeking out different viewpoints can broaden your understanding and problem-solving skills.

Lack of Reflection: Regularly reflecting on your experiences can help you identify areas for improvement.

Narrow Focus: Limiting your focus can hinder your ability to see the bigger picture and innovate.

Overconfidence: Believing you know everything can prevent you from learning new things.

Winging It: Relying on intuition without a solid foundation of knowledge and skills can lead to mistakes.

By addressing these obstacles, experienced professionals can transform themselves into true experts, capable of navigating the complexities of their fields and driving innovation.

I may have a lot of weeds but at least they are green.

Driving home the other day, I noticed from 100 feet away, that my yard and my neighbor's looked green. I take pride in my yard and put in a lot of work, while my neighbor does none. As I got out of my car and looked closer, I saw that his yard was full of weeds—true to the saying, "good from far, but far from good."

There's something I admire about my neighbor's laid-back nature. Sometimes I wonder how much easier life would be if I could adopt his relaxed demeanor. No matter how hard I try to chill like him, it eludes me.

I’m not suggesting that laid-back people aren’t successful, I have type B friends who are at the top of their fields.

Being a type A, I’ve come to believe that there’s a hard way and an easy way to go about things. Over the past 60 years, I’ve learned that taking the easy road often means more work down the line. When my son was in college, I’d advise him to choose the tough courses, reminding him that eventually, you’ve got to put in the effort.

I live by a philosophy I call Good, Better, Best. "Good" is where you start—it’s the bare minimum. "Better" is when you refine what you’ve learned to the point where others begin to take notice and even try to emulate you. "Best" is when you’ve reached the top of your game, but it demands continuous improvement. The catch is that "Best" can easily slip back to "Better" or even "Good" if you’re not vigilant.

This philosophy has been a cornerstone of my CTV business. Back in 2017, CTV was a bit chaotic, but our goal was clear: to simplify, localize, enhance targeting, optimize, and be completely transparent—that was our "Good."

We moved to "Better" by expanding our offerings—adding more supply, virtual MVPDs, sports, QR codes, dynamic ads, and more.

As we strive for "best," we continue to improve, taking our clients with us by educating, listening, learning, and creating new opportunities. On February 1st, 2024, we launched clients on Amazon Prime. Perpetually improving we enhanced our reporting, multiplied our efficiencies, and built new partnerships with high-end supply-side & demand-side partners. In 2023 & 2024, we placed our clients in every major league sport and most top-tier events. I am happy to say that CTV | Streaming are game changers & the dominant viewing platform.

We work tirelessly to maintain our "Best" status by strategically planning, placing, optimizing, measuring, and maximizing CTV and streaming opportunities for our clients. This, in turn, allows our clients to focus on doing their best for their growing list of customers.

A lot of effort went into my yard, my neighbor can keep his dandelions and crabgrass.
