Recently I was recruited by other national valuation and advisory groups. Whether or not you are actively seeking a change, the recruitment process can help you gauge the market for your skills and experience, as well as the opportunities available. It isn’t every day that we take inventory of why we appreciate where we work, as people, many of us are conditioned to think the grass is greener on the other side.

Despite the inquiries, that included offers, I continue to be a proud member of Cushman & Wakefield. These are a few reasons I still choose to fly under the Cushman and Wakefield flag:

TEAMWORK – I have been fortunate to collaborate with dozens of C&W appraisers across the country. My national work on funeral homes and cemeteries has introduced me to many talented and thoughtful individuals. Firms I have been a part of in the past would balk at the possibility of “wing-dipping” for special purpose properties, my colleagues at C&W have embraced the opportunity and provided outstanding collaboration to complete the assignments.

LEADERSHIP – I have been very fortunate to have worked directly under C&W’s Valuation and Advisory Market Lead, Erick M. and currently work under the Northeast Market Lead Ed Falkowski III, MAI, MRICS, SRA. While many firms the leadership often stops with the person just above you, that is not that case at C&W. I can discuss ideas and collaborate with highly respected and talented individuals like James Farrer, MAI, Richard Cenkus and Michele Kauffman.

OPPORTUNITY – About four years ago, there was an opportunity to provide valuation services for a portfolio transaction of cemeteries in California. This single engagement started a specialty practice that has performed over 150 funeral home appraisals and over 50 cemetery appraisals across the country. Not only for financing purposes, but for private acquisitions, estate planning, litigation support and purchase price allocations. If not for C&W, the opportunity to provide these services would not be possible.

There are many reasons I could list, but these were my top three. Ultimately, declining offers from competing firms is a personal decision, and one I do not make out of a lack of respect for other firms, but because at Cushman & Wakefield I know I am part of something that is larger than myself. I am part of something that has allowed me to grow professionally. I am at a place that has allowed me to create new professional relationships across the country. I am part of something where my skillset is valued. Most importantly, I am in a place where I believe I am valued.
