Robert Lustig

Robert H. Lustig is a prominent American pediatric endocrinologist and professor emeritus of pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).31 He is known for his expertise in neuroendocrinology, childhood obesity, and the health impacts of sugar consumption.35

Dr. Lustig received his B.S. in Life Sciences from MIT in 1976 and his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980.41 He completed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital in 1983 and a clinical fellowship at UCSF in 1984.1 In 2013, he obtained a Master of Studies in Law (MSL) from UC Hastings College of the Law.34

Throughout his career, Dr. Lustig has held faculty positions at various institutions, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Tennessee, Memphis.1 He joined UCSF in 2001, where he served as Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program.16

Dr. Lustig has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and reviews, mentored pediatric endocrine fellows, and provided endocrinologic support to several protocols of the Children's Oncology Group.12 He gained public attention in 2009 when his medical lecture "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" was widely viewed online.3

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Lustig is an author of books on nutrition and health, including "Fat Chance: Beating the Odds against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease".3 He is also the president and co-founder of the non-profit Institute for Responsible Nutrition.3

Dr. Lustig resides in San Francisco with his wife and two daughters.1
