Highlights
Our city has lost an exceptional man. Learning about Chief Espo’s passing left me extremely saddened. We first crossed paths 35-years ago in Brooklyn South, where a bond formed as he generously mentored me with advice and unwavering friendship. Witnessing his ascent through the ranks to become a four-star chief, the highest-ranking uniformed member of the department, was inspiring. Chief Espo's tenure of 13 years as the greatest and longest-serving Chief of Department in the history of the NYPD is a testament to his remarkable dedication.
He was a genuine leader. From restoring order during the Crown Heights riots by reclaiming the streets, to his steadfast presence during the harrowing events of September 11th Chief Espo epitomized what it means to be a cop's cop by standing side-by-side with his officers during some of the city's most trying times. He played a pivotal role in guiding the NYPD and the city through the aftermath of one of the nation's darkest days. His unwavering commitment was evident as he respectfully escorted the remains of all our service members from ground zero. His legacy as an extraordinary leader and a compassionate human being will remain forever. Chief Espo’s impact transcends time, and the void left by his absence will be deeply felt.
I know that you and Chris are together again. Rest in eternal peace. I will miss you greatly boss.
I love you.
