Head Sustainable Finance EMEA (Europe, Middle East& Africa) at ING
Robert Spruijt is a seasoned finance professional currently serving as the Head of Sustainable Finance for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) at ING, a position he has held since July 2019.14 In this role, he leads a team of 29 professionals across the EMEA region, focusing on engaging with clients on their sustainability strategies and providing sustainable finance solutions.4
Spruijt's career in sustainable finance spans over a decade, with significant experience in both Europe and Asia. He began his career at Rabobank, where he worked for about 10 years in various roles, including project finance and energy derivatives.4 During his time at Rabobank, he helped establish the renewable energy finance business in Asia and structured innovative transactions for water projects.1
In 2016, Spruijt joined ING as Director in the Energy Mid & Downstream department, where he worked on corporate, acquisition, holdco, and project financings for various energy sector clients.14 His current role at ING involves overseeing a global team that completed 317 sustainable finance transactions in 2021, with 245 of those in the EMEA region.4
Under Spruijt's leadership, ING has made significant strides in sustainable finance. In 2023, the bank mobilized €115 billion to support clients' transitions to more sustainable business models, surpassing its target of €107 billion.3 Spruijt is known for his expertise in combining local sustainable finance coverage with dedicated sector knowledge, which has proven to be a differentiator for ING's clients.3
Spruijt is also involved in developing innovative approaches to assess companies' transition plans. He has been instrumental in ING's efforts to create an AI-enabled methodology for judging the credibility of client transition plans, which the bank has invited other financial institutions to use.2
