I was asked by a CEO for help hiring a CTO. Specifically, I was asked for interview questions. Here's what I sent over. What did I miss?

Become a Strategic Business Visionary:

  1. Can you describe a situation where you identified a new technology or technical approach that gave your previous company a competitive advantage?
  2. How do you balance short-term technical needs with long-term strategic vision?
  3. Can you provide an example of a successful collaboration between your technical team and business stakeholders to achieve a strategic business goal?

Cultivate Executive Presence:

  1. Tell me about a time when you successfully influenced key stakeholders, such as investors or regulators, to adopt a new technology or method.
  2. How do you maintain your knowledge and thought leadership in emerging technologies?
  3. Describe a scenario where you had to represent your team's technical capabilities to a non-technical audience. How did you approach it?

Deliver Excellence with Your Engineering Team:

  1. Can you talk about a project where your team successfully met tight deadlines without compromising on quality?
  2. How do you ensure that your team maintains a high velocity of engineering development?
  3. Describe your approach to resource allocation when developing new capabilities versus maintaining existing systems.

Develop Technical Capabilities to Propel Business:

  1. How do you prioritize the management of technical debt in relation to developing new features or capabilities?
  2. Describe a time you had to revise an architectural roadmap because of changes in business priorities or emerging technologies.
  3. How do you ensure that the IT systems used by employees enhance productivity and are secure?

Manage Engineering Investments Prudently:

  1. Can you share an example where you had to decide between insourcing and outsourcing a particular technology function?
  2. How do you assess the ROI of a new technology or platform?
  3. Describe your experience in budgeting for engineering projects, and how you managed cost overruns, if any.

Promote Team Agility:

  1. How have you organized your previous engineering teams for optimal speed and cost-effectiveness?
  2. Describe any experience you have in standardizing tech stacks across multiple teams or projects.
  3. Can you share an example of how you’ve successfully integrated offshore or nearshore resources into your engineering team?

Foster Performance and Growth:

  1. Describe how you have balanced fostering a culture of respect with driving high performance in your previous roles.
  2. What’s your strategy for recruiting and developing talent that balances business acumen, interpersonal skills, diversity, and technical expertise?
  3. How do you ensure that team members have a sense of meaning, autonomy, growth, impact, and connection in their roles?

I'll post what responses to look for in the comments.

A year and a half ago I was in a meeting and said: "There is no such thing as self healing RPA [robotic process automation].". This was after two well meaning but failed projects. Well.... today I get to admit: I was wrong.

Found the following while reading through the latest AlphaSignal newsletter. Still early days but welcome to the future of self healing RPA thanks to large language models.
