We are hiring! Come be an integral part of our expansion!
It was a special treat playing host to Ambassador Yang Wanming whose roles include former Chinese Ambassador to the Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, and current head of the Chinese Friendship Association with Foreign Countries— Chinas de facto foreign affairs division for local government and provincial governments.
I was lucky enough to be a fly on the wall whilst Mr. Yang together with Neil Bush and former U.S. ambassador to Qatar and special envoy to China, Chase Untermeyer, fondly exchanged first person accounts of high level meetings between American and Chinese Presidents and diplomats. It was eye-opening to hear about the genuine and long standing friendships our top level officials forged with theirs (China’s).
The key takeaway was that interpersonal relationships between two countries MATTER. From the top on down, frequent in person exchanges are the basis of building mutual trust and respect. We can’t underestimate the effect that Covid had on this. I am more hopeful now that we can avoid conflict with China than before meeting Ambassador Yang.
