Highlights
I just attended an excellent webinar titled "Chaos at OpenAI - and what it means for AI" hosted by MIT Technology Review. It was a thoughtful reflection that went beyond the superficial aspects of the drama that unfolded last Friday. My biggest takeaway from the webinar was the confirmation that, in a capitalist economy, the battle between product and research, or better yet, ethical research, always ends up in favor of product. The sobering conclusion is that the monetization of AI is the ultimate winner, and the original mission of AI, which was meant to benefit humanity, is at significant risk. Big tech companies are the ultimate winners, and we, the users, are the ultimate losers.
As I’m leaving #tag2023 where AI was certainly one of the most prominent topics discussed, I can’t wait to read another thought-provoking Blueprint (available live and free on 12/15/23). Thank you, Lucy Bernholz !
