The Unexpected Benefits of Overthinking.

Overthinking—ever been accused of it? I know I have.

Before dismissing it as a negative habit, let’s take a closer look:

1️⃣ Symptoms of Overthinking

Endless loops of “what if?” questions, analysis paralysis, second-guessing decisions, and constant worry about future outcomes.

These symptoms can drain your energy and make decision-making feel impossible.

Ever been stuck on a project team with an over-thinker? 😖

2️⃣ Solutions to Overthinking

🔘 Set Time Limits: Give yourself a specific time to make a decision. Once the time’s up, act. No more revisiting—decide and move forward!

🔘 Break It Down: Turn big, overwhelming tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Focus on the first step and take action. Rinse and repeat.

🔘 Mindful Distractions: Engage in activities that break the overthinking cycle—exercise, a quick walk, or even a chat with a colleague can reset your mind. Do what you know defibrillates your own thinking loops.

3️⃣ Benefits of Overthinking

Here’s the twist: when harnessed strategically (rather than as a default for every situation), overthinking can be a powerful tool.

🔘 Even Deeper Analysis: It allows you to explore multiple perspectives, leading to well-rounded solutions.

🔘 Risk Mitigation: Overthinking can help you to more exhaustively identify potential pitfalls before they become real problems.

🔘 Creative Problem-Solving: Channel that energy into brainstorming and innovation, where deep thinking can produce breakthrough ideas. This is my go-to action for truly imaginative solutions.

Overthinking isn’t the enemy; it’s how and when you use it.

Give yourself permission to indulge in overthinking at the right moments, and it can elevate your work, decisions, and impact.

The key is not to overthink it. 😉

What do you think about this?

Have a top day!

The Essence of Creativity: 🍫 + 🦮 + 🦠 + 📡 = 🤔

What do melted chocolate, dog walking, bacterial defence, and military communication have in common?

In an era where the unexpected defines the future, creativity is the key to unlocking new possibilities and staying relevant and valuable.

But what is creativity really about?

Through years of observing innovation across industries and recently working with a micro-economist pioneering novel food production, I’ve come to believe that creativity is about discovering and connecting seemingly unrelated ideas—seeing what others overlook.

Consider these examples where creativity emerged through the cross-correlation of apparently unrelated parts:

1️⃣ Velcro: Inspired by how burrs cling to fur, George de Mestral invented Velcro. He connected the natural mechanism of burrs with the need for a simple, effective fastening solution, leading to a product that now has applications across industries from fashion to aerospace. This innovation exemplifies seeing a practical use where others might have seen only an annoyance.

2️⃣ The Internet: The Internet emerged from connecting military communication needs with the idea of decentralised information sharing. Tim Berners-Lee saw beyond the original purpose of ARPANET, linking it with the concept of global information access, which transformed how we connect, communicate, and share knowledge worldwide.

3️⃣ The Microwave Oven: While working on radar technology, Percy Spencer noticed a chocolate bar melting due to microwave radiation. He connected this observation with the idea of cooking food, leading to the development of the microwave oven. This invention revolutionised kitchens worldwide, showing how an unrelated observation in one field can lead to a breakthrough in another.

4️⃣ CRISPR-Cas9: The CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool was born when Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier repurposed a bacterial defence mechanism for precise genetic engineering. By connecting this naturally occurring process with the challenges of gene modification, they unlocked new possibilities in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology, demonstrating how cross-correlation can lead to breakthroughs in science.

These examples reveal a fundamental truth: creativity often lies in cross-correlating unrelated parts and seeing connections others miss. Some of the most impactful innovations arise from synthesising diverse ideas, technologies, and observations.

I would argue that the ability to identify and leverage connections between seemingly unrelated ideas is crucial for driving innovation and staying competitive.

What are your thoughts on the idea that creativity is about cross-correlating unrelated parts?

Have a top day!
