This month Google has started to roll out significant changes to the Chrome browser that marks the start of changes that potentially impact your digital marketing campaigns and analytics solutions.

I suspect you have seen many other posts in your LinkedIn feed about the “cookie apocalypse”, “death of the third party cookie”, etc.

What is happening? Early this month Google commenced the roll out of the Privacy Sandbox feature to 1% of all Chrome users to test the impact of this change. Whilst this seems a small percentage it means that millions of Chrome users now are using the Privacy Sandbox feature.

It is similar to what has already occurred in other browsers such as Safari, Firefox and others. As Chrome is the most popular browser on the market this may have a more widespread impact on your marketing.

The Privacy Sandbox feature prevents the use of third party cookies for marketing and analytics purposes and has the potential to impact your current digital marketing campaigns.

Google will continue to test this feature until Q3 2024 after which it is likely that this change will be rolled out to all Chrome users.

What does this mean for marketers?  Many of the technologies that marketers have relied upon for digital advertising over the years use third party cookies. With this change these cookies will no longer work. This reduces the effectiveness of some technologies and may limit your ability to target customers and measure campaign performance.

Whilst this test only impacts a small percentage of the market, this step marks the beginning of the final end to using third party cookies for marketing.

It isn’t the end of the world but does require changes in how things are done in digital marketing.

It is also a clear signal that you need to plan for this change and start acting ASAP.

What do you need to do? Assess your marketing campaigns to identify which channels and campaigns are impacted for your business. Develop and execute a strategy to use first party data to enhance your marketing campaigns. Implement alternative technologies such as conversion APIs, enhanced conversions, and server side tag management. Test campaigns running on technologies that don’t rely on third party cookies to identify the potential impact on your business.   It is important to start the process of assessing the impact of these changes on your marketing now. Starting now will allow you time to refine your strategy before your digital advertising campaigns are impacted by this change later this year.

Incubeta is here to help you transition through this changing landscape. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need help with this.
