On my first day at IIT Kanpur, during my first ever computer science class, I realized I was in BIG BIG trouble.

I found myself absolutely hating computer science. On my first day itself!

Over the next 4 years, I pursued electives across fields - biology, economics, management - finally landing on management as my field of interest.

But I still scored a CGPA of 9.3/10, along with receiving the Academic Excellence award. Because ironically, even to get out of the computer science discipline and do an MBA, I needed good grades in that stream.

Lack of interest is an excuse used by many students to justify poor academic performance. Or by many professionals to justify poor performance at work. I do not buy it even one bit.

You do not need to be interested in a course or a job to do well. Whichever job you take up, you will go through phases that will be boring. No job, and no project, is filled with exciting stuff ALL the time - there are bound to be moments of monotony.

The people who are disciplined enough to be able to perform well despite their lack of interest, are the ones who have my true admiration.

If a job does not interest you over a period of time, switch. But do not use the lack of interest as an excuse to justify poor performance.

Many years back, there was a popular writer on Quora. Everyone, including me, loved his posts. But overnight, he got banned.

Someone discovered that a few of his posts were copied from Reddit. Overnight, he garnered such massive hatred from his followers who felt betrayed that his account was banned that very night.

Maybe only a few of his posts were copied. Maybe all. Nobody knew for sure. And he was given no chance to justify his stance.

The fact is - you might work for years to build a reputation. But a single mistake can bring it all tumbling down. Sounds harsh, but that is the truth.

We all make multiple decisions every single day. Most of them are trivial decisions.

But every once in a while, we face a dilemma. A dilemma between an easy route that might be "slightly unethical" vs. a challenging route that is ethical.

You WILL find yourself at such junctures for sure, and when you do - think long and hard before making your choice.

Remember - all it takes is a single mistake to bring it all down.
