LinkedIn reminded me about completing 5 years at ITC recently! Though I have been with ITC for 18+ years now, it’s been 5 years since I returned from the sabbatical I took to pursue the one year MSx program at Stanford University Graduate School of Business

That one year experience has been truly transformational in so many ways. It sparked my interest in entrepreneurship, equipped me with approaches, tools and frameworks to build startups, helped me develop diverse perspectives on dealing with challenges, hone my leadership capabilities and build a strong network with amazing folks to learn from. ITC Limited supported me wholeheartedly in this endeavor and gave me a complete free hand to pursue my interests once I returned.

In these last 5 years, I got an opportunity to apply all that I learnt and build a new line of business. The 0-1-100 journey in setting up and scaling the Food-Tech business at ITC has been exhilarating and we are just getting started. At this moment, I feel especially grateful towards my strong team of 350+ folks who are giving their all to realize our collective vision.

As the popular saying goes - “𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝗼𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽.”

Glad to have taken this step!

In the ongoing Paris Olympics, I am hearing two viewpoints in discussion with colleagues and friends:

𝗣𝗢𝗩 𝟭: Entering semi-finals for the first time and beating a high seed player is commendable and we must celebrate that. The player deserves an accolade.

𝗣𝗢𝗩 𝟮: I think we are celebrating too early and should not settle for anything lesser than a podium finish before we start acknowledging the achievement with all pomp and show.

𝗠𝘆 𝗣𝗢𝗩:

Celebrating milestones and progress is important and has a definite purpose to energize the morale and provide a tailwind for bigger achievements. However, it is equally important to delicately balance that with a reminder of the ultimate goal to prevent any complacency to seep in. There are clear examples of individuals and teams who are able to step up their game on the big day and crucial moments. We have seen Australia do this consistently in Cricket. We have seen Djokovic do this consistently in Tennis. What do you think sets them apart? I believe it’s about taking milestones & progress in the stride, seeing them as momentary successes and at no point loosing sight of the ultimate goal.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗢𝗩?

I am eager to hear your thoughts on this. So do share whether big celebrations on achieving these milestones is justified or do you think we are celebrating too early and should wait for the end outcomes? 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 👇
