Highlights
AI has been buzzing with the ability to generate memes, write funny poems, and create more visual content. But at Contrarian Ventures (big kudos goes to Robina v. Stein) we have been spending loads of time trying to form a thesis what could be built to accelerate net zero for “the real world.”
AI can truly make a difference when it comes to practical industrial applications. We are thrilled to partner with the altrove team—Thibaud + Joonatan—who are working to strengthen Europe's resilience in the supply chain of critical materials, which is essential for fast-tracking the energy transition and maintaining European economic competitiveness and resilience. Super excited for this one on all fronts and esp to be working with such a superstar team.
We are excited to lead altrove pre-seed of €3.7m and join this journey with a superstar syndicate including Emblem (Bénédicte de Raphélis Soissan and Guillaume Durao), Deichmann Media (Nicklas Jensen and Mikkel Hesselgren), Entrepreneur First, and super angels such as our dear friend Thomas Plantenga from Vinted, Thomas Clozel (CEO of Owkin) and Julien Chaumond (CTO at Hugging Face).

Most discussions are almost always about financial capital. However, equally or perhaps even more important is social capital. My definition of social capital is the capital you give back through your pro-bono time and € donations. I call this a social tax, which compounds over time in the form of social capital. This should be accumulated throughout one’s life. It starts with the place where you were born, continues with the institutions that educated you, and extends to the day-to-day business / job you do.
Yesterday was a historic day for Lithuania. The largest private donation in Lithuanian philanthropic history was made by the Canadian-Lithuanian family, Angele and Sigitas Kazlauskai, who donated their life’s work to Vilniaus universiteto fondas. This donation doubled the endowment size from €4.3m to €9m. The ambitious goal is to grow it to €100m as the next milestone. Justinas Noreika, CFA, the endowment team, and Alvydas Zabolis as parton and founder, along with Vilniaus universitetas / Vilnius University are doing tremendous work at the Vilniaus universiteto fondas.
I am super excited to have contributed to this process alongside Laisvis Makulis, PMP, Jurgis Rudgalvis, Justas Šaltinis, CFA, Kornelijus Celutka, Elena Mickevičienė, and Vidmantas Drizga, who worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition over almost two years process.
As a result, I will join the Management Board of Vilniaus universitetas / Vilnius University Endowment. This is a truly exciting chapter and probably one of the most significant roles I have been entrusted with so far in my life. Thanks goes to Al Pace + Nick Simone!
This, as a result made me review my social capital journey so far. I started backwards by choosing to dedicate my life’s work to a sector that addresses one of the world’s biggest problems: climate change, or as I prefer to call it, climate worsening.
However, the origin and institutions are equally important as foundations. Therefore, today I commit to a personal pledge: as of last year, annually, 2% of all my profits will support various non-profit initiatives, primarily using an endowment-style approach. As I progress in life, I will consider increasing that percentage as my financial capital grows.
Many people begin engaging in philanthropy only after accumulating significant financial capital. In my opinion, this approach doesn’t make sense. Starting now and allowing it to compound makes much more sense and creates a greater impact. Financial capital should move in tandem with social capital.
More exciting projects are on the horizon, each with its unique story and powerful impact. More to be shared soon.
I decided to share this publicly because there is a lack of philanthropic culture in Lithuania, and much needs to change from a regulatory perspective to enable it. I am learning as I go, and I find that learning in public and together with similar folks is just more rewarding ✌️
