As a software engineer, I'm used to getting what I want. I write code, and it works perfectly. Then I tried making a CustomGPT that would listen to me.
I wanted a quick way to reflect and vocalize my thoughts at the end of the day, and I thought it was a perfect use case for a custom GPT.
Software engineering is iterative; you can't write everything right away and perfectly. Prompt engineering is iterative as well, except it is completely different, and in some ways, infuriating. No matter what I did, I could not get my GPT to do what I wanted.
"I want you to help me reflect about my day and ask me questions" changed to "Refrain from judgmental responses like 'it's fantastic' or introducing your own opinions." turned into an almost algorithmic breakdown of what good listening is (or at least the type of listening I was after at the moment). And none of it worked.
The shift from "If X then Y" to vague explanations, requests, begging, and YELLING (yes, capitals do matter to ChatGPT) is drastic, to say the least. LLMs aren't replacing software engineers anytime soon, but... one huge weakness software engineers have in this new world is the expectations we have of what computers are and how they work. Generative AI is giving incredible power to all of us, using simple language that we all know. In some ways, if you don't have any programming background, you're much better equipped to take advantage.
So, what are you waiting for? Can someone make me a CustomGPT that will listen to me?

Why do ALL calculator apps look the same? Did we really nail that design in our first attempt in the 1960s? Recently I’ve been reimagining the calculator. Part 1 of my journey below.
Are you looking to re-imagine something, build something new, or just need a new perspective and solution for a problem. I’d love to help. Lets talk https://lnkd.in/eeMa6u9y.
