Highlights
Having spent close to 25 years in the Caribbean region and having raised our kids on a Caribbean island meant that, outside of the most incredible quality of life, there were significant limits to what local kids could achieve. This is mostly the result of the dire financial difficulties most islands cannot seem to get out of. It’s sometimes hard to believe the stark contrast between the tourist’s view of the world’s bluest water, whitest beaches, and amazing climate versus the often unbearable situations of many of the local poor families on the islands. Families that try to survive on mere euros a day.
My kids went to a public school which at times did not have sufficient books for the kids, no AC in the 30+ degree classrooms (just a few fans), and where sports consisted of outdoor ‘sports’ (in the Caribbean heat) on a rough patch of land. Many of the less fortunate kids in these schools even relied on school meals as their families could not afford to give the kids a proper breakfast or lunchbox.
To escape this difficult life, sports have always been incredibly important for the kids on our islands. On one hand, it supplied a healthy distraction from the often difficult circumstances the families experienced on a daily basis, and at the same time, it gave the kids the possibility of escaping their financial limitations and insecure future. This is why the tiny island of Curacao (and neighboring islands) has won incredibly prestigious WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in baseball for both senior and junior teams. And this is why top athletes from these tiny sunny islands become world-famous athletes in some of the best sports teams in the world in baseball, softball, soccer and even tennis. Incredible results for a tiny island of 150,000 people.
When I watched the Ubuntu Football clip below I have to say that I felt as if I was back on Curacao. It was very close to home. The nature, weather, colors, the type of buildings, the school. And the obvious financial limitations. However, the #attitude and sheer #determination I saw and felt in the eyes of the kids and the coaches was powerful. Very powerful. This is so much more than sports for these kids. This is about changing their lives and consequently those of their families and communities. And they take this responsibility very seriously.
It is clear that within our BrainsFirst DNA we are truly focused on making this world a better place, by creating a more diverse and inclusive world using our (cognitive) Neurolympics games to identify people’s natural talents.
