Much of my thinking around the challenges women face in pursuing their ambitions has been shaped by the thought-provoking and powerful book ‘Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead’ written by Sheryl Sandberg. (Sheryl stepped down as COO of Facebook’s parent company, Meta, in late 2022 after more than a decade in the position). In the book, Sheryl writes about women taking their place at the table, pursuing their own ambitions and shaping the organisations they lead.

This Women’s Month, these themes are top of mind for me, particularly considering that - as mentioned in a recent post - almost 60% of our Executive Team are women and almost 70% of all Discovery Health staff are women. Interestingly, a March 2023 UN Policy Report shared that women hold 70% of healthcare worker jobs globally too.

Emma Knox and Maria Makhabane are two phenomenal women in the Discovery Health Executive Committee. Emma Knox is the Chief Executive Officer of Vitality Health International Africa, which has expanded its health insurance services to seven African countries. Maria Makhabane is the Chief Growth Officer at Discovery Health, where she leads our health new markets business, covering more than 240,000 lives.

Hit play now to watch my conversation with Emma and Maria in honour of Women’s Month. We speak about leading with purpose, how to navigate complexity at work, the eternal juggle between work and home life, and more.

Emma and Maria, thank you for the fun and vibrant conversation, and thank you to you and your teams for the outstanding work that you do. And to all of the women within Discovery Limited Health and the health system more broadly, a happy Women’s Month.

Introducing you to the leadership of the Discovery Health Executive Committee and Executive Office. It is a privilege and honour to work alongside these powerful and inspirational women on a daily basis.

As almost 60% of our Executive Team are women and almost 70% of all Discovery Health staff are women, I wanted to wish them all wonderful women's day tomorrow.

The picture is of personalised notes that I wrote to the women in the Executive Team this morning to accompany a small gift to thank them for the incredible work they do and for being such inspirational leaders.
