I’m excited to announce that I’m launching a new non-profit organization today, Renaissance Philanthropy, that will work with philanthropists to design and implement ambitious philanthropic strategies leveraging science, technology, and innovation.

Philanthropy has played an important role in breakthroughs across the last several centuries, from wealthy patrons supporting innovators like Da Vinci and Galileo during the Italian Renaissance to the Rockefeller Foundation’s support of the creation of molecular biology and the Green Revolution in the mid 20th century.

Our mission is to fuel a 21st century renaissance by increasing the ambition of philanthropists, scientists, and innovators.

Building on the wonderful opportunity to work with Eric Schmidt over the past seven years, our team's goal is to build a virtuous loop of increasing ambition and impact between philanthropists and the scientific and technical community.

Our bet is that we can get many more ambitious science and tech efforts off the ground by doing three things:

  1. Providing strategic advice to philanthropists navigating science and technology philanthropy.

There are over 2,000 families in the U.S with $500M or more in wealth and over the next 25 years, $100 trillion will be transferred to inheritors and charities. Despite its immense potential, science and technology philanthropy is complex and time-intensive. We hope to reduce the barriers for philanthropists to pursue large-scale philanthropic initiatives.

  1. Surfacing more breakthrough ideas.

Existing institutions and incentives often constrain the ability and willingness of scientists to design and launch ambitious programs to tackle the world’s greatest challenges and drive real change. We help scientists, technoogists, and innovators to dream bigger and to identify breakthrough field strategies that pair technical insights with the right levers for greatest impact: from coordinated research programs and the use of prizes and market-shaping mechanisms, to policy entrepreneurship.

  1. Designing, launching, and implementing philanthropic programs and funds

With more than three decades of experience in government and philanthropy building moonshots that have transformed fields, we hope to provide the infrastructure needed to design and operate such efforts: recruiting and supporting the right program-leads; building a core of committed donors; sourcing and evaluating awardees; and cultivating an ecosystem of partners across sectors who act as force multipliers.

We’ve got founding support from Eric and Wendy Schmidt and some exciting partners, programs, and funds in development - so stay tuned!
