Nursing is a blend of patient care by assessing the patient, assisting with ADLs, looking at trends, paying attention to what's working and broken in the care plan, advising providers ALL SO the pt not only gets better, but can leave the hospital in a timely manner. It does something to the body and mind to stay in a hospital room day in and day out, where you don't have much sunlight, where you're cooped up in a room with little social interactions outside of hospital staff and visitors.
AI's mastery is in finding patterns, but the human body is interconnected and complex, so it goes without saying that AI has its limitations. High WBC count isn't always indicative of an infection, as stated by the nurse in the article. It could be elevated due to a chronic illness or bone marrow disease. Nurses assess the patient within a context of knowing the patient's history and their base level.
Working with AI to set safety measures is helpful, but we have to see it for what it is, a tool that's not infallible. The artistry of nursing is seeing all the factors at play, using assessment skills to make judgement calls, to protect patients from unnecessary testing and medications that can make patients more sick.
Another area AI could help nurses is in easier and faster documentation so more time can be devoted to actual patient care. The key is to have nurses working with developers so that way AI can best be utilized and partner WITH those on the front lines. If you know companies in the AI x healthcare space who are looking for nurse consultants, holler at me!
Meditation literally transforms our brain. Clinical studies on the effects of meditation are interesting given there is no one exercise or style that defines what meditation is. That said, from the existing literature, it's evident that mindful meditation creates a stress buffer.
To a degree, you don't need studies to confirm this. Do you need a study to confirm that being outside in nature uplifts you? You feel this innately. You sense it.
This sensing is considered subpar in our culture. You're told it's "subjective" and "soft." Real strength lies in a simultaneous softness. Cultivate true strength, rewire your brain, biohack by dropping into your body. If you're keen on developing a meditation habit, consider breathing with me from Jan 1-30.
We breathe together to remember; to feel into just how intelligent and wise our bodies are.
