At the recent National Day speech, PM Wong shared some big changes for new parents to be in Singapore.

From the time I had Shan (8 years ago) to now, paid leave for new parents has gone from 16 weeks to 30 weeks. This is huge progress and such a step in the right direction!

Not just does it mean that babies get more time with one of their parents during their formative first few months, this also allows mums to share the load with their husbands from day 1 if they so choose to, or use that 10 weeks extra to extend their breastfeeding journey (which alot of mums sometimes struggle with when they have to go back to work). The flexibility in allowing couples to choose how they use this leave is great!

Well done, Singapore. Now let’s work on the next thing that most young parents in Singapore want fixed - expensive childcare, more childcare leave days (the current amount is simply not enough when you have to care for a sick kid) and stressful primary 1 enrolment system.

PS - If you were the SG government and had to tackle one of these 3 issues I highlighted first, which would it be?

In the last 3 years we have grown theAsianparent from just being SE Asia’s #1 parenting publisher into a full fledged content-community and direct-to-consumer brand.

What does that mean exactly? Well, we use the insights that we glean from our 30 million strong reader community to manufacture our own safe, natural and halal mama and baby brand Mama's Choice (we now have over 70 products).

We then work with our power users (our VIP parents community) to let them resell our brand. We now have over 120,000 VIP parents who are an active part of this insights to commerce engine.

While it was a natural transition for us to graduate from a pure play advertising business model, it was also one of the hardest business moves we have had to make.

We tried to search for media companies that had successfully scaled into commerce or retail businesses and did not come up with many. We did find many that had done it the other way round, brands or commerce companies that had started to build content and community as a key pillar or strategy.

Internally it meant changing my company’s DNA and culture from a newsroom to a brand. It also meant up skilling myself and my team to intimately understand the world of ecommerce and how to build brands effectively.

As part of the journey of upskilling myself and the team, I am so incredibly stoked and happy to share that, Rahul Welde has agreed to join our board as an independent director.

Rahul comes with over 30 years of former experience at Unilever where he was the executive Vice President of digital transformation. He’s one of the sharpest guys I have ever met and he’s truly passionate about leveraging technology to push boundaries. I am really excited to build with Rahul and learn from his exceptional knowledge in building and growing brands.
