Highlights
And that’s a wrap on year one as director of the University of Maryland’s Jiménez-Porter Writers' House! Couldn’t have done it without the best team in the game, my graduate assistant Mal and my associate director Dr. Dolapo Demuren. * Every year I choose a word to guide me in my decision-making processes and this year the word I chose was HOME. I made a sign and put it on the door to my office to remind us all of what this community is at its most basic level. And as the 2023-2024 academic year runs out the clock, I moved the sign to the back wall of my office, making room for our new word for the 2024-2025 academic year, which is BEGIN. * I also looked over my Battle Board today. At all the things my team and I accomplished this past year. All the pavement we ate. All the hard-fought victories we won. All the targets we never hit. All the classes we created and the ones we didn’t. And then I wiped the thing clean. We climbed this mountain already, and next year we climb a new one. I will meet with my team soon and begin to fill in the Battle Board for next year. But for now, for a moment, it is clean. * Man, I love this place. Best job I’ve ever had!
Man, this is a big deal to me! Ten long years in the game. I’m humbled by this UMD promotion and recognition, especially after hard years working back-breaking part-time jobs to supplement the teaching and writing. Heck, I even decided to walk away from teaching and writing altogether, only to have friends and peers and mentors pull me back in. And thank God they did. Otherwise, there’d be no Molly Blaze or getaway driver novel, no Viking epic, no troll monster screenplay, no Nemesis short film, no directorship of Writers’ House. * Surround yourself with good people and darken their doorways always, friends and peers and mentors. To all my friends and mentors and students, thank you! * It takes a whole dang village! 🖤
