Some things are bigger than work. Bigger than promotions or job titles. Bigger than balance sheets & P&Ls. Bigger than how many direct reports we have. Bigger than how much money we raised or how much equity we retain. Bigger than our wealth or our net worth.

Yet we spend so much time wrapped up in all of it that we lose sight of this fact. Every now and then something awakens us and we see the charade for what it is.

Yesterday morning I saw a text on my watch from my dad asking if my brother in Israel was ok. I had no idea what he was talking about since I make a strong effort not to use my phone on Sabbath (and it was also the Jewish holiday of Sukkot) and I was focused on celebrating with my friends and family. When I grabbed my phone to see what he meant, I was horrified by what was unfolding: the most heinous attack on Jews since the Holocaust and on western civilization since 9/11.

The (verified) news coming out of Israel depict some of the most evil and barbaric practices humanity has ever known. Entire families - men, women, children, and elderly - murdered in their homes. Women and children kidnapped and taken hostage. Women being raped and tortured before being killed and drug through the streets on display. Beheadings of soldiers. There are no words that can condemn such evil. There is no moral justification or what-about-ism that can explain any of it.

Thankfully, my mom, 3 siblings, nieces/nephews, and friends who live in Israel are currently safe (but very scared). Many have spent much of the past two days scampering into bomb shelters every time the sirens go off (which is too often). Many friends and family members of people I know are now being called up to active reserves to fight in a bloody war that will have no happy ending for anyone.

Life is precious. Once we forget that, we have lost all hope. Let’s, for this moment, take a step back from all the things that don’t really matter and remember the things that we have that are bigger than work.
