The Aspen Education & Society Program’s recently held a virtual release event for our latest white paper, "A Crisis of Student Belonging," authored by Dr. Francesca López, Dr. Lorén Cox, and myself. Belonging is a fundamental human need, and cultivating it is a primary role that schools play. Today, 40% of 15-year-olds report not feeling connected to school, leading to chronic absence and anxiety, which undermines their happiness and our success as a society.

Vote for us to continue this critical conversation at SXSW EDU 2025! We’ll examine belonging through lenses of equity pedagogy, economic development, and systems change.

Hear from me, along with the esteemed panelists:

  • Francesca López, Professor, Penn State University; Co-Author, A Crisis of Student Belonging
  • Susana Cordova Córdova, Commissioner, Colorado Department of Education
  • Ze Min Xiao, Founder and CEO, Center for Economic Opportunity and Belonging
