Highlights

Nov 10 · linkedin

This Veterans Day weekend, we're grateful our longtime partner United Airlines featured us in its inflight magazine for November.

Veterans Day is more than a one-day freebie or discount. It is a time to redouble our gratitude, and recognize the unique character, sacrifice, and spirit of selfless service demonstrated by those who have worn the uniform.

May we all strive to replicate these traits in our careers, and inside the companies we work.

A meme is circulating, even with vulgar language, suggesting people do away with cover letters. Of course LinkedIn would love to amplify this because the suggestion is a LinkedIn link and a resume is all that is necessary to land a job.

The only justification I've seen to date for this advice is that recruiters don't have the time, or candidates don't feel their cover letters are read. This is representative of a broken system, not an issue with the technique. Fix it.

With so many young early-career people on LinkedIn, this is horrible advice. Why would you discourage someone from doing everything possible to stand out?

As a hiring manager, I want to hear the voices of candidates. These are human beings with successes, failures and honest assessments. These are also opportunities to demonstrate applied knowledge and self awareness.

Please, on behalf of a better hiring process for all, fix the process and make cover letters add value again.
