What a spectacle for cricket in the US! The marquee match between India and Pakistan in New York lived up to its billing with a narrow win for India. Over 34,000 people showed up at the venue with thousands more in the ICC fan park at the Oculus. The game not only rewarded the fans for their passion but also created quite a buzz on the streets of NYC. The fan park was well done and the stadium experience was great considering it was a temporary build. And it was amazing to see the number of American-born kids in the venue. Kudos to everyone who worked hard to make this possible!! A true watershed moment for cricket in America and hopefully this provides the necessary boost for the sport locally. Not to mention the USA team likely to make the next round which in itself is a tremendous achievement!

And personally for me, got to check off a few bucket list items. One of them was to see my childhood hero, Saurav Ganguly, just a few feet away! 😀😀

I'll be in New York this weekend to watch a cricket world cup game and that feels a bit surreal!

Cricket was an obsession for me as a kid growing up in India in the 90's. So much of my time was spent either playing the sport, watching it on TV or in stadiums or dreaming about working in it in some capacity (becoming a cricketer was the preferred path but I quickly realized that passion can't make up for the lack of talent :D). When I moved to the States in 2005, I knew I'd be leaving cricket behind. And that was very much the case for a while. There wasnt really much in the way of playing cricket, watching cricket was tough with the time zone issues and lack of networks that had live cricket and working in cricket wasnt even a distant thought.

Fast forward a few years and how things have changed! I got the opportunity to work in a sports marketing firm based in the midwest with cricket governing bodies and teams/leagues as clients. I now get to play cricket multiple days a week here in Texas. My son born here in the US is obsessed with cricket. And finally, I now have the opportunity to attend one of the marquee events of the sport - India vs Pakistan in a World Cup. India-Pak game was always on my bucketlist but never would have imagined New York being the venue!! It's amazing to see the growth of the sport here in North America and it's only getting started!
