Recently my son and I circumnavigated Mt. St. Helens. It is a 34 mile trek across some amazingly diverse and challenging terrain. Much of it off trail. Scrambling on lava rocks. Through canyons and ravines. We did it nonstop in 13.5 hours. Moments of pure joy and excitement. Moments of painful lows. We pushed each other, supported each other, and encouraged each other. The memories we made together were priceless and I am so grateful we did it together.

Kind of like developing a new to world product. The beginning is filled with hope and excitement for a big vision. As teams work through the various challenges they hit walls and don’t know if they will ever find solutions the problem. A former colleague of mine, Colleen Purdy, calls this the valley of despair.

#Invention is hard work and like #adventuring, traveling to new worlds isn’t easy. Teams always hit story seas. A key is to keep your head down rowing together because eventually you will pop through to the other side and arrive at the place you’ve envisioned. In the end, like a challenging trek, the relationships forged will be priceless.

Innovation is crucial for organizational success and longevity in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape. Yet many companies find their efforts to foster #Innovation falling short of expectations. Has your organization tried to be more innovative, only to have those efforts fail? Or perhaps you’re unsure where even to start?

Drawing from practices used by some of the world’s most innovative organizations, I want to share three proven approaches to driving innovative ideas and cultivating a culture of invention. They are:  1.) Gaining and maintaining a profound understanding of those you serve. 2.) Working outside in. 3.) Thinking with your hands.
