When I was starting my career, I remember hearing about the concept of “burning your ships.”
Supposedly, when ancient conquerors would arrive on the shores of an enemy country, they would order that their own ships be burnt to make retreat impossible.
The idea being that if failure is not an option, success becomes the only path.
For some, this concept is likely motivating.
For me, it’s detrimental.
When I feel like failure is some terrible, irreversible thing, I stop taking risks. I no longer play to win- I just try not to lose. And my work always takes a hit.
So for me, failure is now 100% an option. It’s a part of the journey, a necessary catalyst for growth. I either win, or I learn.
You might be different, but I encourage you to analyze your own relationship with failure. Figure out what beliefs you’re holding that are no longer serving you, and determine where you actually source your best work from.
And for leaders — recognize that a culture of “failure is not an option” could be killing your team's motivation and innovation. Building a culture of psychological safety and fearlessness is far more likely to get you the long term results you’re looking for.
