This was the Democratic National Convention last night. Look at all those flags! Look at the huge crowd singing 'Born in the USA'! At some point they were even shouting: USA! USA! USA! Does that remind you of anything?
I think it's absolutely amazing to see Kamala Harris and the Democrats reclaim the ideal of patriotism from Trump and the MAGAs. You can love your country AND build a hopeful movement to try to make it even better. That's the essential difference between Trump's dark and hateful nationalism and Kamala Harris's hopeful, inclusive patriotism.
I'm reminded of an essay by Richard Rorty from 1994. Here are some excerpts that have always resonated with me:
"It is important to insist," he wrote, "that a sense of shared national identity is not an evil. It is an absolutely essential component of citizenship, of any attempt to take our country and its problems seriously. There is no incompatibility between respect for cultural differences and American patriotism."
"Like every other country, ours has a lot to be proud of and a lot to be ashamed of. But a nation cannot reform itself unless it takes pride in itself - unless it has an identity, rejoices in it, reflects upon it and tries to live up to it. Such pride sometimes takes the form of arrogant, bellicose nationalism. But it often takes the form of a yearning to live up to the nation's professed ideals."
"An unpatriotic left has never achieved anything. A left that refuses to take pride in its country will have no impact on that country's politics, and will become an object of contempt."
